The CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, was down 2.3 points to 19.41 during Monday's session after closing above 20 on Friday for the first time since Aug. 1. The VIX measures implied volatility in the S&P 500. A reading of 20 is generally considered normal volatility, compared to a relative calm suggested by lower readings.
